Instead of your usual “Black Friday” – a classic sales strategy involving steep discounts on new products, IKEA launched “Back Friday", a message designed to kickstart its efforts to create a new circular economy. Customers could bring in their used but still usable IKEA furniture and trade it in for a discount voucher worth between 30% and 50% of the original purchase price.

As well as recycling old products, the aim is also to ensure that customers think through their purchases and avoid impulse buys. To encourage such thoughtfulness, the vouchers are valid indefinitely.

IKEA collected more than 20,000 products during the two weeks of “Back Friday.” These products were not only recycled, but also offered for sale again via IKEA’s second-hand shop, ensuring that even more families would be able to outfit their homes with affordable, sustainable furniture.
