In July, Media Smart UK published open resources designed to build children's emotional resilience as they learn to engage deeper with the messages and methods of advertising.
Research shows that over half of girls and a quarter of boys think their peers have body image problems. The resources were created to help children better understand advertising and its influence through engaging and interactive classroom lessons that touch on sensitive issues related to body image.
The resources include teacher's notes and a guide for parents and guardians so that they can discuss this subject at home. There is also a supporting film featuring young people discussing the issue, as well as suggested case studies.
Media Smart is an industry-supported initiative that creates free educational materials for schools, teachers, parents and youth organisations, to help young people think critically about the advertising they come across in their daily lives.
